This edition of Amegy Bank’s Treasury Management Newsletter focuses on education. Keeping up with today’s trends and opportunities for efficiency gains and revenue enhancements is an ongoing challenge amidst our already full day jobs. Amegy is committed to the ongoing education of our staff as well as our clients and prospects. Many Amegy Treasury Management officers attended educational sessions hosted by the Dallas Association of Financial Professionals and the Houston Treasury Management Association in September. At both events, Amegy bankers shared their expertise with session attendees on a multitude of topics. A Fraud Alert was also dispatched in September to our clients keeping them abreast of the disturbing escalation of electronic fraud. Amegy then offered sessions on maximizing the use of Commercial Cards in Houston and Dallas in early October. Later that month our Richardson clients were exposed to the risks of Occupational Fraud and the growing impact of Cyber Fraud. Several of our own bankers attended the Association of Financial Professionals’ annual conference in Las Vegas to keep up with industry trends and avail themselves of many educational opportunities.

Next year will offer more opportunities for continuing education. If there are topics you would like to see addressed, please let us know as we make plans for more educational venues.

Merchant Services Product Update

On November 5, 2013, Amegy began offering new merchants one simple, consolidated statement for all card types. Previously, American Express (AMEX) was not included. Our merchants had to negotiate with AMEX for their processing fees and settlement and with Amegy for all the other types of cards. With this enhancement, Amegy is able to price your AMEX transactions as well as your Visa, MasterCard, and Discover transactions. The big bonus is that merchants now receive their AMEX deposits in 24 hours as they do deposits for their other cards.

Benefits of the New Program

  • One consolidated statement for all card types
  • One payment for all card types, expedited payment for AMEX, and 24 business hour funding with an Amegy deposit account
  • One point of contact for all card types
  • One solution for all card processing

Amegy’s current merchants will not be left out. Starting in the first quarter of 2014, we will offer the enhancement to all existing Amegy merchants who currently do not accept AMEX. Since our AMEX pricing will be competitive with the other card types, we anticipate that many of our merchants will want to take advantage of expanding their acceptance to include AMEX.

Starting in the second quarter of 2014, we will extend the offer to our current merchants that already accept AMEX. They will be able to take advantage of lower rates, a consolidated statement, and 24 hour funding.

New merchants are also able to accept PayPal cards at their terminals. Like the AMEX transactions, they will appear on the merchant statement with all their other card types. Amegy’s current merchants will be phased in similar to the AMEX enhancement.

Commercial Card User Conferences

In early October, Amegy held Commercial Card User Conferences in Houston and Dallas. The events were attended by over 50 clients and prospects. Attendees were able to network with fellow card users and to hear from expert speakers about new trends in the card world and ways to maximize the benefits of using cards to reduce expenses and increase income. One speaker shared the way to expand card usage by tapping directly into the Accounts Payable system. This new solution is called Visa Payables Automation (VPA). Working with Amegy and Visa, a company provides a vendor file that is matched against Visa acceptors. In consultation with Amegy and Visa, the company determines the targeted vendors, and Visa contacts the vendors to obtain agreement to accept card payments. When it is time to pay the vendor, the company sends a card payment file directly from Accounts Payable (AP) to Visa, and Visa notifies the vendor via an email that the payment is available. The email includes a link to a secure website with the card information needed to complete the payment. The card spend on VPA is aggregated with the company’s normal card spend to determine the rebate.

Another great presentation was titled “How to Have a Discussion with a Supplier.” Our speaker shared the growing trend among suppliers to accept credit cards for payments. The primary reason for the suppliers accepting cards is the guaranteed funds within 24 hours. Also, suppliers are seeing potential customers move to suppliers who accept cards. This movement has motivated them to start accepting cards. Many suppliers are able to negotiate better payment terms - rather than 30 or 45 days for check payments, they might get paid in 15 or 20 days for accepting cards. One of the big challenges for suppliers accepting credit cards is the merchant fees which can be 2.50% to over 3.00% on the value of the merchandise. On large dollar items, that can be a big bite out of the profit. Suppliers should look to implement Level II and Level III processing. Your merchant processor probably has a program that will allow you to do this, and it could save you over 1.00% in merchant processing costs. If your processor does not have the capability, contact your Amegy Banker or Treasury Management Officer, and they can share with you what Amegy has to offer.

Today companies are challenged with controlling expenses, finding ways to increase revenues, and maximizing their working capital. Amegy’s solution will provide you with extensive reporting for all three segments of Commercial Card allowing you to control how the cards are used, the types of suppliers from which purchases can be made, and how much can be spent by any one user per day and per transaction.

RECAPS: 2013 AFP & Dallas Fraud Luncheon

Another Successful AFP!

Amegy Bank was pleased to attend the 2013 Association for Financial Professionals (AFP) Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. The AFP Conference is a national conference that rotates between major cities on an annual basis. The AFP Conference is dedicated to providing quality educational sessions and networking opportunities to finance and treasury management professionals. The AFP established and administers the Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) and Certified Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis (FP & A) Professional credentials.

Our Amegy bankers appreciated the opportunity to attend the conference this year and to interact with the many Texas companies that also attended AFP. With over 6,000 attendees, 140 educational sessions, and 250 exhibiting companies, our bankers enjoyed seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones at the various educational sessions, booths, and networking events. Our dinner events were filled with fun, great food, and excellent company. We look forward to seeing you at AFP 2014 in Washington, DC, November 2-5, 2014.

Fraud Prevention Luncheon

On October 22, 2013, Amegy Bank’s Treasury Management in Dallas hosted a luncheon to share fraud prevention best practices with our Richardson clients and prospects. Over 35 attendees heard our speaker, Mary Murray, share information on the escalation of fraud perpetrated from two directions - inside and outside the workplace. Companies today are challenged with making necessary changes to protect their companies from these malicious acts. Occupational fraud generally originates inside the workplace and can be avoided with (among other practices) dual control over check stock, financial and banking systems, etc. Avoidance of cyber fraud, which generally originates outside of the workplace, requires dual control also. Luncheon participants walked away with valuable information on occupational and cyber fraud as well as a list of best practices to help protect their assets.
